As a contemporary work of fiction, Hill’s novel Willows of the Spring most resembles the artistic and aesthetics associated theories expressed as Afro-modernism, a “claim of historicity, of change, development…social and psychic complexity.” It extends the afro-modernist theories associated with jazz into remix theory. As intentional ‘rehearsal’ of a historical process, Hill uses archival photos to articulate the multidimensional processes associated with identity performance.
